Founded in 1974, Pittsburgh Public Theater is Western Pennsylvania’s flagship producing theater company and a powerful force in the economic development of Pittsburgh and its region. The Public is nationally renowned for the wide range and excellent quality of its work, including masterworks of the international canon, musicals of exceptional merit, cutting-edge contemporary plays, American classics, and world premieres. Each year The Public produces a 6-play subscription series and one or two non-subscription events, offering 225 to 240 live performances. We serve as a magnet destination in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, bringing 80,000 to 85,000 patrons downtown annually. An economic survey in March 2012 determined that The Public’s audiences generate $5.14 million in annual revenues to other downtown businesses (restaurants, parking facilities, retail shops, hotels), in addition to the amount spent on tickets at The Public. The Public contributes to regional employment, supplying salary or fee income to over 300 artists, artisans, administrators, and service personnel each season. The Public creates the audience of the future through our Department of Education and Outreach, which operates the Open Stage Student Matinee Series, The Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest, Creative Dramatics, Free Community Performances, special discounts for students and for those under age 26, and an array of workshops and classes for youth and adults. Much of our community programming is free of charge, ensuring that our doors are open to all.  We have produced an impressive 26 World or American premieres, each an exemplary work of dramatic art by a talented playwright with a unique voice.
