Atlanta Shakespeare Company is a veteran theatrical ensemble and arts education team dedicated to an Original Practice aesthetic – that is, exploring with a modern audience a classic production that honors the playwright’s original intent. Whether we are performing Shakespeare’s, Arthur Miller’s, or another classic playwright’s work, that means period costuming and a setting that is in agreement with what’s in the text, as well as an approach to the story that acknowledges the world view of those who lived in that time period. We use Shakespeare’s poetry as a point of communion between the actor and the audience, and we have found that our direct-address approach makes Shakespeare accessible even to those new to classical theater. This is especially noticeable in our education work, where students from fifty-four local counties and nine additional states find personal resonance within Shakespeare’s text, using his words to find their own voices. Through Shakespeare, students speak words encompassing all the dimensions of human experience: racism, religious bigotry, love, fate vs. choice, suicide, loyalty, and a host of other topics of immediate relevance and importance to today’s youth. Our educational offerings give students the ability express their thoughts and aspirations through language. Better communication leads to less violence, a greater chance of success in the job market, and more fulfilling interpersonal relationships; all of these in turn remove some of the barriers to making moral and ethical choices. The Atlanta Shakespeare Company has achieved numerous national and international “firsts”; among other notable achievements, we were the first American company to perform all of the 39 plays currently attributed to Shakespeare.
Atlanta Shakespeare Company will present student matinees of Julius Caesar. The company will provide related educational activities, including workshops, post-show talkbacks and a study guide. They anticipate reaching 15 schools located in Georgia.
